[CASE STUDY] Liberty Drives — Hyde Park Appeal Charity

by: Geremy O'Mahony

Objective

Liberty Drives, a small disabled charity based in Hyde Park, had no press presence, no social media, and was being quietly funded out of the pocket of its founder, Richard Briggs OBE. The goal was simple: raise awareness, attract support, and help the service reach more people in need — without relying solely on one man’s generosity.

Process

After volunteering as a driver, I was asked to manage the service — and quickly recognised the huge PR potential. With a heartfelt user testimonial, I secured a feel-good mention in Metro. I launched a Facebook presence, activated 35 drivers to engage online, and circulated flyers and press releases across London. This led to coverage in The Kensington Magazine, The Londonist, and a full-page feature in Age UK’s magazine. I negotiated a charitable partnership with UBER, added Liberty Drives to TripAdvisor, and continued to build momentum with community-driven visibility.

Outcome

The PR campaign transformed the charity’s profile. Liberty Drives secured £35,000 in funding from the National Lottery, Waitrose, the Co-op, and a variety of trusts and foundations. Sponsorship also followed from Winter Wonderland and Viegel Automotive — brands aligned with accessibility and community. The service went from unknown to widely recognised and supported — with long-term funding, public presence and press coverage to match.

Testimonial

“Geremy brought energy, creativity and clarity to a service that had always relied on goodwill. Thanks to the press, partnerships and community buzz, Liberty Drives became something bigger — something sustainable. I couldn’t have done it without him.”

— Richard Briggs OBE, Founder of Liberty Drives
